My 75 floor pan was painted black.

I don't think you can do it without removing from the car. There is some info. about someone who refinishes them in the forum. Search on "dash bezel".

I exchanged the Airtex filter for the Carter filter and it looked exactly the same, with the indentations in the sleeve. I was sure it would also not fit, but since others have been able to make this work, I decided to give it one last try. After a lot of pushing and twisting and wriggling, the filter finally began to gradually slide over the pump inlet. I eventually got it pushed on as far as it would go so I am also now good to go. I don't know what the difference is between the Airtex and Carter. They look identical, but the Carter is made in the US whereas the Airtex is made in China. Maybe I just wasn't persistent enough with the Airtex filter. Hope this helps anybody else that may be frustrated with these parts.

Thanks for the comments. I probably should have gone the Fiero route, but I have now committed quite a bit of time, effort and expense to keeping the original fuel system. I hate to give up just because of such a simple problem as filter fit. I will try the Carter filter and see if I can make it work. I will update with my results and include a picture to document my hopeful success.

I purchased the Airtex pump and filter from the Rock Auto website. Photos show the difference between the old and new pumps. Inlet snout has been shortened, so the original style filter will not install. I sent the Airtex filter back already, but you can see a pretty good image on the website. There are a couple of other brands of pump and filter offered, so I am going to try another brand of filter. If the indentations are present on the next one, I may try grinding them down so the thin metal sleeve will slide over the inlet. I am also wondering if GM may have another filter application that would fit. Maybe the Fiero?

Wow! Is that typical of what happens when a timing belt breaks or is that unique to this engine because of the configuration? Also wondering how the valves got bent without doing any damage to the pistons?

@W.R.Good Thanks for the reply. Good to know there are options for keeping the original style pump. I am sure I will need injector O-rings also. I assume you procured them through CVOA?

I bench checked my original pump after years of storage. It runs and pumps but leaks like a sieve. Wondering which way you went on replacement and how it worked for you.

That is an amazing price. It would be good to know where they originate and a little bit of actual driving experience with them.

I have a granddaughter and her family that live in Adrian, Mich. They were just here for Thanksgiving! This might be something I would be interested in seeing.

You may be working too hard. You are not old enough to blame it on old age forgetfulness.

Understand the mistake. Iowa/Nebraska...it is all about the same.

Are you sure the museum is in Iowa? I thought it was Nebraska.
