This car appeared for sale in April of 2009. According to the ad,” Up for bidding is this sweet running Vega. The body and running gear are solid. The gauges do not work but the speedometer and all lights are functional. There is some surface rust around the windshield on the driver’s side and a few nicks elsewhere. The interior is not bad except for a tear on the upper driver’s side seat and the top edge of the rear seat. It could use some new carpet as well. This is a rare numbered vehicle [number 1632 of 3508] and has a Bendix fuel injected 16 valve four cylinder engine. It comes complete with owner’s manual, shop manuals, and some spare parts. The VIN is 1V77E5U262245 and the mileage is 89,100.”

In September of 2011 Dick Baumhauer delivered this car to Scott Bumgardner in Ashtabula. The VIN is 1V77E5U262332. According to Dick, Dean owned this car since it was new. It has been sitting for the last ten years or so. Dick got it running after replacing the gas line and the filter, and it was sold to Scott. The car looks to be solid. It has over 80k on it, and it was repainted about 20 years ago. It has a CB antenna mounted in the roof, just ahead of the hatch, an aftermarket radio, under hood light, swingouts, and a very solid, rust-free undercarriage..

E-mail pz2q3j@comcast.netMy name is Paul Gallo and I live in the Detroit area. I recently purchased CV #1643 in Ohio and I am in the process getting it mechanically sorted out. There are a couple of parts I’m looking for one of which is the timing belt cover and also a hood release cable (I know, but I figured I’ll ask). If you don’t have either of these parts, can you tell me who might have these? Any help here would be much appreciated. Best Regards Paul
Reiceved by John F. Cowall, Region 8 12-10-14. Hello John, Thank you for the warm welcome. I have attached the registration form and I’ll do the best on a brief history of the car. Owner 1 for which I have the new owner packet was from Johnson City TN. He sold the vehicle to owner 2 somewhere in the late 70’s. Owner two drove the car for a while but told owner three when he sold it to him in 2011 the car had been sitting since 1980 or 81. Owner three purchased the car and got it running, replaced wheel cylinders, etc. His name is Daniel Aguirre from Columbus Grove, Ohio. I included owners 1 and 2 names on the registration form.
The car is actually in pretty decent shape from a body and rust standpoint. The only rust-through I can find is a very small area under the battery box. It has the normal dings, scratches, chips etc and the original paint is really tired. There is a pretty good surface rust spot above the rear window on the hatch and the paint is gone behind each wheel front and rear. My plan is to get the car sorted-out mechanically then work on cosmetics. The car had a rattling noise which comes from the front cam cover which I think is the belt slapping the cover due to excess play in the waterpump. I have removed the radiator and the heater core and those are in the process of being repaired/re-cored. I need to remove the waterpump next and get the core sent in to the CVOA merchandise person......would that be you or your dad? I also need to buy some upper end gasket kits, lower rad hose and I’m going to need an upper hose which I’ll need to source. The car runs reasonably well. I pulled the plugs and all looked okay with the exception of number 4 which looked loaded up a bit. Don’t know if that is a product of short trips and cold idling or a marginal injector....all questions to be answered during my shake down this winter. Car still has original plug wires and dist cap which will get replaced as well. Intake plenum still has the numbered sticker that matched components. Could not find any others however. Interior is pretty nice, no rips or tears, original carpets which are pretty good except for hatch area which is a bit faded.
As far as myself, I am not new to the collector car hobby. I have owned a number of cars over the years and besides the CV, I have a 69 Nova 396/375. I always liked CV’s however and I was able to strike a pretty good deal on this one which I found on Craigslist in Findley/Lima. I work for GM at the Warren Tech Center in Service Engineering. I have included a couple of pictures of the car after I got it home and gave it a much needed wash. I will be giving you a call regarding a timing cover next week. Thanks again!
Best Regards, Paul Gallo (248) 255-5346

All original 1975 Cosworth Vega. A true survivor. This car was sold by Freeman Chevrolet in Lindsay Oklahoma to a woman that lived in Marlow Oklahoma, she special ordered it. I bought it from her with intentions of restoring it but it looks like I may never have enough time. I have owned it for about 10 years. It has some surface rust and some rust around the battery box but otherwise is in decent shape. The rear seat needs some upholstery work and the rear carpet, over the spare, is mostly junk, from sun exposure. It hasn't been tagged or driven since 2002, or started for that matter. I put fresh fuel in it and a new battery and it started right up. The rear 2 fuel injectors are leaking externally, o-rings are bad, a cheap fix. The tires are rotted, but held air. This is not a car you could get in and drive cross country, right now. It is number 1645. The MAT (manifold air temp sensor) is bypassed, but as far as I know that is the only thing wrong with the engine. The MAT acts like a choke when the engine is cold, it runs fine without it. This car will be a great driver with lots of "unusual" appeal with just a little elbow grease. I did not clean it up at all, just pulled it out and took pictures. It comes with the standard 2 part warranty, if it breaks in half on you, you own both parts! Seriously though, I think it's a great car and someone is going to get a great deal on a VERY rare automobile. It is however, over 30 years old. If you are high bidder, you bought it. You did not buy a chance to come and test drive it. No tire kickers, this is a no reserve auction, high bidder gets it, with no warranty express or implied. Email any questions, good luck. The VIN is 1V77E5U262593.

According to a CVOA membership application, this car belongs to Terry Cahion as of April of 2009.

I am going to check out a local CV for sale in the St. Louis area this weekend, #1649. Does CVOA have any history on this car before I head out there? Also, if not, would you like me to copy down the VIN at least to keep on record? 45K miles, very good shape on the outside, but asking too much for it. Gonna look at it anyway. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Ken

Ken, I show that car in Alabama 3-and-a-half years ago. That is all I show on it though. If you could get me the VIN, interior, and other pertinent info, that would be great. Thanks, Chris

This post is a little late coming, but I did finally go out to see this supposed low-mile pristine example of Cosworth history, but to my disappointment it was a somewhat rusty, barely-running textbook example of neglect by an owner who had no idea what he had and did not really care. Too bad. It wasn't a bad car really -- couldn't get it started, but it was all there, just rusty; the wheels were shot (one was even painted black) and the car even came with a second Hutton-prepared CV motor complete. He wanted $6500 for the car and $2500 for the second motor. Yeah! Like I said: Not a clue. For those that were interested, the only thing I was able to get off the car was the VIN, which was 1V77E5U262697. It is currently owned by "Rob" (forgot to get his last name) in Imperial, MO (just south of St. Louis) at 2210 Cook St. His phone # is (636) 464-7703 in case anyone is interested. Sorry I didn't have more info. Ken

Offered on Yahoo in December of 2007. Post reads: “Regretfully I must part with my Cosworth Vega. Thought I would let you all have first crack at it before I list it elsewhere. This is #1649 of a limited production run of 2061. It has been garaged for the past 5 years, after a dim witted mechanic apparently ruined the Teflon coating on the cylinder walls when it was taken in for a minor fuel injection problem. It ran, but put out horrible black oil smoke clouds. Other than this the car is in great condition. I am currently deep in debt and so don't have the time or money to fix it. My loss is your gain. $3,500.00, OBRO. Approximately 45,000 original miles VIN: IV77E5V262697. Location: St. Louis Missouri. If interested email me at a9blut@.... Don't worry if I don't get back to you right away. I normally only get around to checking my email once a week.

Offered again in February of 2008. “Regretfully I must part with my 1975 1/2 Cosworth Vega. This is not a regular Vega; this is a COSWORTH Chevrolet's first fuel injected car. Exterior and interior are in great condition for their age. I am currently deep in debt and so don't have the time or money to fix it. My loss is your gain. Approx. 46,000 original miles VIN: IV77E5V262697 Location: St. Louis, Missouri. Winning bidder will have to arrange for pick up at their expense. COSWORTH VEGA HISTORY... Designed by GM Central's corporate engineers, the Vega fell to Chevrolet for manufacture and sale. GM VP and Chevrolet General Manager John DeLorean immediately recognized the value of and the need for an image booster for the new kid on the block. He memo’d Jim Musser, suggesting that he contact Keith Duckworth at Formula One engine builder Cosworth Engineering, Ltd. to see if they might be interested in the new technology/high silicon content Vega engine block for use as a four- cylinder racing engine. Duckworth promptly visited the States to examine the new Vega block closely. Impressed by its sound structural concepts and logical lines of stress Duckworth decided that Cosworth was interested, and a dialog with Chevrolet's engineers began in 1969. Engine design engineer Cal Wade, at the forefront of Chevrolet’s racing efforts, promptly headed for England to meet with the Cosworth folks and to begin discussions toward development of a no-holds barred racing version of the high silicon content all aluminum Vega block. The Cosworth Vega was thus conceived as a complete sports sedan: high performance engine, high performance chassis, and unique outward appearance. It was to be introduced in 1974. It's introduction was postponed until April of 1975, numerous changes were made. However, the most apparent change was the change in color. John DeLorean decreed that henceforth all Cosworths would be black and accented with gold. In the first week of February of 1975, the Lordstown plant built five Cosworth Pilot units. The first salable unit was then built on March 27, 1975. Each Cosworth Vega came with gold stripes, cast-aluminum wheels, wide radial tires, full instrumentation, an engine-turned gold dash panel, front/rear anti-roll bars, a four-speed gearbox, and the Cosworth Vega twin overhead cam engine with Bendix Electronic fuel injection sporting a stainless steel competition header. The Cosworth Vega was not forgotten by knowledgeable enthusiasts. The Cosworth Vega is one of the rarest of Chevrolets, much rarer than that holy icon, the '63 Corvette Split Window Coupe (~13,000 built). The Cosworth Vega came with a unique drivetrain and a level of trim that set it apart from the standard Vega. When the Cosworth hit the showroom floor, it was the 2nd most expensive car that Chevrolet had ever sold. The Cosworth Vega Owner's Association (CVOA) was founded by a "knowledgeable enthusiast" from California, the late Bob Maloy, in 1979. Dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the Cosworth Vega automobile. It obtains and markets hard-to-get parts, such as the body stripes, engine gaskets, timing belts, fuel filters and EFI seals."

Sold for a reported $2,843.

No info on this car, but a wheel from it appeared on eBay in March of 2005: “You are bidding on a Cosworth Vega wheel from a 1975 Cosworth Vega #1650. I have shown pictures with what is wrong with the wheel. There is a ding on the front part of the wheel. The back part of the wheel has a slight out of round. The good thing is it holds air and the color of the wheel is very good. Overall the wheel is in very good shape. An Oklahoma seller. According to an email from the seller, “The VIN number is 1V77E5U262717. I think the starter went out when I quit driving it 10-12 years ago. I belong to the CVOA. There is some information on file there.” He later posted the cam carrier with cams for sale and said the Tonawanda # is 1924.

In November of 2005 the bare block (supposedly in very good shape) from this car appeared on eBay, out of Oklahoma, then the head (with the date 6/23/75 stenciled on it).

May of 2007: Up for bid is a 1975 Cosworth Vega with no reserve. I have been piecing it out for the past couple of years, mainly the engine. The body is in very good condition. There are new tires on it. I was planning on restoring it and had them put on 3 years ago. Tires are in excellent condition with no weather cracking. It has been in the garage all the time. An NOS set of tires went for over $800 on EBay a few weeks back. There are other parts but not pictured. Buyer is responsible for picking it up. One photo shows the inside with no dash. Dash is included, but #1650’s plaque is not. I live between Tulsa and Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Starting price is $499.99 with no reserve. Bid with confidence especially if you are piecing it out. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Thanks
