#0002 "The Story" part 2
1975 Cosworth Vega 0002, Part 2 by: Jay Hovick
“Part 1” was a Facebook post on my page within the last two days (now also on the CVOA Midwest Forum), with the CVOA article from 1986. If you have not read that article, you should!!! I am going to go into what I have found for details of this car since the article in the 1986 CVOA newsletter .
Some brief background. Bob Maloy built this car as a replica of #0002 that was built by GM for the 1974 Car Tour, according to the CVOA article in 1986.
Bob Maloy was the owner of RAM Engineering in the 80's AND was also the founder of the CVOA Club.. He used a Cosworth that he owned to make the replica of #0002. The Cosworth he used was #1797. Bob was very proud of #1797 and it was featured in the Automobile Quarterly book “Chevrolet A History From 1911” pages 170-171.
According to an article in the 1982 newsletter,, #1797 had the Recaro Spectrum interior and the Zemco Cruise Control in it. Therefore, I am making the determination that the Recaro interior is not part of the original #0002 by GM.
A quote from 1987 CVOA Magazine #23, credit to Paul Wicker and Dick Baumhauer... “Since the original preparation of this article, another article concerning a Cosworth Twin Cam Vega, Dash Plaque Number #0002 has been published. Although this vehicle is a fine example of a well engineered and constructed high performance vehicle, it is doubtful that any substantial portion of the vehicle is in fact directly traceable to the pilot production vehicle originally bearing that dash number.”
Part #3 will detail facts found post 1987.
