My car is #1862. I bought it in about '85, owned it for a few years, sold it to my friend’s dad who sold it to someone else, who thrashed it, and then sold it; I ended up with it again in about '91-trashed. I then sold it to another friend of mine, who sold it to another friend of mine who sold it back to me. I guess I'm supposed to own it. This was around '95. I started restoring it then. I had the body & paint done (black) pulled the engine and painted & detailed the engine compartment and put it back together, stock but with Webers, and stopped there. It’s been sitting like this for the last 5 years. Now I'm ready to finish it. I just want to make a nice driver out of it (again). Sometimes I get this wild turbo hair going, but don’t know if I’ll do that or not. Anyway, that’s my little Cosworth story and I’m sticking to it. Bo Stout, igmabs@aol.com Stockton, CA

ey John! Hey I contacted you a couple of months ago in regards to my 1975 Cosworth Vega (#1870). At the time, I was just getting into the car and trying to revive the little Rip Van Winkle. I had to get the gas tank completely cleaned by a pro who was willing to tackle it. He had to cut it open on the top to get it cleaned out and the re-welded back. After a lot of picking at the fuel system and everything else, I was able to get it started, running, idling. Ive driven it around the neighborhood for some really short drives. It has brand new tires all the way around, so it's not bad driving. However, the brakes are pulsing a bit, so I suspect I have a warped rotor(s) or drum(s). Right now even though it's running, the high pressure pump that I put in ( not an Original factory pump) is making a lot of noise and every so often, she's making black smoke and appears to run rich. It's intermittent right now, so it's kind of puzzling.
As for the body, paint, and interior.... I've repainted the hood, roof, and hatch, refurbished any aluminum ( trim, bumpers, etc) shined, polished, cleaned anything we can touch. The interior is really nice, it took a lot of cleaning to get it right, but I'm happy with how she's coming along.
My next goal is to get it over to AAA to get a title and tags, The car has been off the road since about 1984 as far as I can tell, so they have to visually inspect it before I can receive tags. Luckily, since it's a '75, so it doesn't need to pass the smog test here.
Here's a few progress pics for now. I hope you are having a good summer and hopefully you've been able to get your Cosworths out to some summer cruises
Take care , Stephen Wimmer

This is a rare and very complete 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega, 1 of only 2061 produced and this is number 1870. The car is very original and has not been modified or turned into a Hot Rod. Yet. It would make a great car for a stock restoration, a Restomod, or even a Race Car. These were actually high tech little cars and pretty expensive for a Chevy in 1975. Aluminum alloy DOHC 4 cylinder engine with electronic Fuel Injection and the sticker price was only about $900 less than a Corvette. 4 speed manual transmission. The Vega has been in storage for about 15 years and will need to be gone through before driving it. I have not even attempted to start it. I bought it as part of a package deal with a 1963 Split Window Corvette and, while it's a cool little car, I have no room for it. It still retains it's original black with gold stripes paint. The paint is weathered on the roof and hood from the car cover. The paint issues are still much better than dealing with bodywork, rust repair, and 14 paint jobs like alot of them. What you see is what you get here. The body is in excellent shape and is very straight. There is a small rust spot on the bottom of the passenger side rear quarter panel and a couple of tiny pinholes on the front of the hood. Nothing big and overall it is a very solid example. The floorboards are in good shape. The interior is in good condition. It could use a carpet kit as it is worn severely in the driver's foot area. Clean, clear California title in hand. This car appeared on eBay in March of 2007 sans engine and trans and a few other things as well. The ad read: “1975 Chevy Vega, no engine or transmission, good body, very little rust, perfect for V-8. Questions 707-718-2971.”

Unknown date. Once owned by Joe Suman of wasoncebroken@aol.com . He reports: “I've owned 4 Cosworth's over the decades, though long ago. #1875 which I sold to Malloy and Reugebrink back in the 80's. The others were #2405, #2276, and another the number of which I forget. #1875 was a very, very special car as well. Malloy, myself and I believe a gent by the name of "Tuggle" perhaps Tom Tuggle...sounds vaguely familiar --- went in on purchasing "MOLDEX" stroker cranks. 1875 was the recipient of a seriously nasty 2.3L. Carrillo rods, ARIAS 11.5:1 pistons, the stroker crank, Hutton Weber 45's. It was a quick car, but it ate an exhaust valve seat and an episode of "How a 12k Cosworth motor destructs" would seem appropriate. I ended up selling the car to either Malloy or Reugebrink, I don't recall.”

This car was shown in the 32nd Annual [2009] Ault Park Concours d'Elegance in Cincinnati, OH. Photos by conceptcarz.com. From the front license plate, it may be that this car is/was owned by Louis J Alvino of Bloomington, IN.. This 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Twin Cam Vega is number 1876 of 3508 produced between 1975 and 1976. Each engine is hand-built by one builder in Tonawanda, New York. The Cosworth Vega was a special high performance model with a virtually hand built Tonawanda engine developed by Cosworth Engineering of England. The special Cosworth Vega DOHC 16-valve engine had shotpeened rods, a forged magna-fluxed crank shaft and a computer controlled induction system. The engines were shipped to Lordstown where the cars were off-line assembled apart from regular production models. 2,061 were built for its introduction year. The Chevrolet Vega was produced from 1971 through 1977 and offered in a variety of configurations including a coupe, hatchback and station wagon. These were not the names that were used, officially, they were Notchback, Hatchback, and Kammback. During the Vega's development, the codename it was given was the 'XP-887'The subcompact market had become very important to American Automakers, partly because of the influence that the Volkswagen Beetle had secured and the rising competition from other imports such as Toyota and Datsun. During the 1960's Ford introduced their Falcon and Chevrolet their Corvair but neither were able to grasp the popularity that had been established by other imports. With oil embargo's and customers demanding more fuel efficient vehicles, this market was evolving and becoming more important to master. The Chevrolet Vega was another attempt at wining over the hearts of the American public and to crack the tough subcompact market. The standard engine with a single-barrel carburetor produced about 70 horsepower while the addition of a second carburetor increased horsepower to 85. The 2.3 Liter engine quickly gained a reputation for being unreliable. Due to a poor cooling channel design the engine had a tendency to burn through oil rather quickly as a result of the poorly designed valve stem seals. This did little to inspire confidence in the vehicle. Problems seemed to follow the vehicle throughout its lifespan with reports of overheating, carburetor fires, premature body rust, ruptured fuel tanks, and other issues. It was given the reputation as 'the car that began rusting on the showroom floors'. Even with its problems, the Chevrolet Vega was a popular vehicle with over two million examples produced during its lifetime. Chevrolet combated the vehicles issues during every year of its production and continued to improve the vehicle. In 1976 they backed their produced with a '5-year, 60,000-mile' warranty which was far superior to the warranties of the time. The Vega has been included on Forbes Magazine's 'worst car list of all time.' Rising competition and build quality issues were the reason for the demise of the Vega. As the Vega was being phased out Chevrolet introduced the Chevette and Monza which provided even more competition for the subcompact car. By the time production had ceased, 2,154,434 examples had been produced. [By Daniel Vaughan, Nov. 2006.

• NOT MINE .. saw it in my travels today. Located just outside of Lancaster, PA. On a local small car lot that always has older cars on it . Cosworth dash plate claims #1878 . The sun glare killed some of the pics i took , but the interior looked pretty clean , and looks like body work has been done . From peeking through the grill could see a motor under the hood ( obviously the radiator is missing though) . I am not affiliated with this lot or car in any way ... just passing it along , figuring maybe someone here is interested ! 6/09/17

In November of 2005 this car appeared for auction out of Scottsdale, AZ. “These Cosworth Vegas were made by Chevrolet in 1975 and 1976. There were a total of 3,508 produced between both years. Chevrolet wanted to produce this car in 1974 but the EPA Emissions testing halted the program. So in order to get the car on the road, Chevrolet had to produce huge oversized catalytic converters, lower the compression to 8.5:1 and many other enhancements. So production started in 1975. Well, here is the FIRST YEAR -- #1881 OF 3,508 PRODUCED! COLLECTORS TAKE NOTICE; THESE COSWORTHS WERE BEST KNOW FOR TECHNOLOGY! FROM THE ALUMINUM BLOCK AND HEAD, FORGED CRANK, TWIN OVERHEAD CAMS, 16 VALVES (Remember, this is 1975 -- 16 valve engines were unheard of.), STAINLESS STEEL HEADERS and ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION! These Cosworth Engines were HAND BUILT in Tonawanda, New York, then tested and shipped to Lordstown, Ohio. THE COSWORTH VEGA IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF CHEVROLETS! MUCH RARER THAN THE HOLY ICON, the '63 Vette Split Window Coupe which had a production of 13,000! Also Historical Collector Magazine voted the Cosworth Vega #8 OF THE TEN MOST SOUGHT AFTER COLLECTOR VEHICLES ON CARS BUILT BETWEEN 1974 AND 1986! So take notice on this one! IT HAS A HUTTON AIR CLEANER, WEBBER SIDE DRAFT (NO CHOKE), AND AFTERMARKET EXHAUST! Again, IT'S #1881 OF JUST 3,508! It's also even rarer because in 1976 most Cosworths were painted other colors to help sales. This color combination is the #1 of the Collector Vegas as it was the one used in most advertising, and even today you know when you see a Black and Gold Vega Cosworth, you immediately recognize it! Well, HERE IT IS; A 1975 -- FIRST YEAR PRODUCED! IT'S A 4-SPEED! It's in NICE CONDITION FOR A 1975! It has some light paint checking on the top from the Arizona sun, but it SHOWS VERY NICE AND IT DRIVES GREAT! IT'S ABOUT AS ORIGINAL AS YOU'RE EVER GOING TO FIND! SO BID WITH CONFIDENCE, BECAUSE OUR RESERVE IS $8,500.00 AND WE'RE TOLD THAT IT'S WORTH TWICE THAT! Good, then you can all Bid2Win! After all, this is eBay. WE LOVE IT! Now you can see the power of the Internet! HERE'S A RARE COLLECTOR ITEM THAT CAN ONLY APPRECIATE IN VALUE, SO IN MY EYES, YOU'RE NOT "BUYING," YOU'RE "INVESTING!" GET YOUR BID IN NOW! Also, MILES ARE EXEMPT DUE TO YEAR, but it looks like the 52K could be actual! Title is Free and Clear, Arizona.”
