Fuel Injection System

Requesting feedback with attempts to enhance engine efficiency by addressing the system componets descibed within the Fuel Injection Field Guide documents if possible.  Attempting to address engine efficiency due to a number of `out of the ordinary aspects' as follows;

  • High level of hydrocarbon exhaust emission, i.e. eye burning and notable high concentrated exhaust fumes.

  • High engine rpm at start up (up to 3,000 rpm and cycling up and down for a period of time) prior to leveling off around 1,800 rpm.  Note, rebuilt Fast Idle Valve with new O-rings.

  • Fuel Pressure holds at 38 psi (be advised as to refurbished fuel tank and sending unit, new high pressure fuel pump, rebuilt fuel injectors and replaced the fuel regulator with a confirmed tested regulator (Sutton Motors).  New spark plugs and fuel filters (tank and @ engine bay) and engine timing confirmed to specifications.  Likewise the MAP had been rebuilt by FIC).

  • Engine power appears to be lacking as well.

After reviewing all the CVOA literature, the ECM may be a source of re-calibration? Appreciate any thoughts, as well as any other suggestions that come to mind?

Many Thanks,

Jim McIntosh

Jim,

I want to say that owning a 1976 all stock Cosworth Vega in CA requires a bi-annual emissions test which I have successfully done about 5 times. That said the results have always been under the High limit perameters and if there was an issue it has been a deterioted canister hose at tank, a cracked fuel cap gasket and so far that has been it for a 80K mile engine.
