Car fell into a state of neglect and the battery tray and frame rail rusted away making the car unsafe to drive. Went to local junk yard and hack sawed a good frame rail end and welded into place. Then after attending the roundup in Watkins Glen heard about an Orange Cosworth in FL. After returning home checked it out and bought it. It was in much better shape so I decided to restore it and keep the 2474 for parts.

At the Deltona roundup in 2008, I blew the engine in the #3241 Orange car where connecting rod came thru the block. The engine from #2474 was transplanted into #3241. JD Smith

Hello gang, well I am finally getting round to working on #2474. Some problems.
1. No spark or fuel. Gas has turned to varnish. Been sitting for 5 years. I am in the process of dropping the tank. The body manual says to disconnect the wiring (I found underneath the back seat.) Do I just push the grommet thru from the top?
2. Should I replace the tank or clean it out? It seems I read in the CVOA magazine about by shaking gravel around inside it?
3. The PAIR system was not on the car when I bought it...but a pair of VW air cleaners with filters. The hoses even make up OK. It there a problem with continuing this, or should I try and find the stock Air Cleaner?
4. The wires from the coil to the HEI were replaced (the old stalling problem) right before it was parked. Should they be replaced again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It’s too bad I let this car go for so long. Thanks, Jerry D. Smith in Orlando. CwVega76

Now that #2474 is running I can concentrate on the rest of the issues: The steering wheel is sticky, like the finish is coming off. I have tried different cleaners etc. With no luck. Jerry

In 1986 my son in NC turned 16 and wanted the Cosworth, so I drove it back to NC and transferred title to him. A couple of years later he spun a bearing and his high school shop class rebuilt the engine but for whatever reason they could not get it started. In the mean time, I changed jobs and relocated to Deltona, FL. After his graduation he wanted to attend college in FL so I pulled car down on a tow dolly. I then took car to local Chevy dealer who got it running. In tank fuel pump was all gummed up. I then drove the car for a few years. Around 1992 after a backfire and blue smoke, followed by quick shutoff. I found someone locally who agreed to try and fix car. Two years later he still did not have it fixed so I had it towed somewhere else where they found a shim had split in two and messed up the cam. After ordering a cam from Hutton the new mechanic got car running again.

My son moved out of state and we re-titled the car back to me,

In 1982 moved to Frederick Maryland where I found out about the CVOA. Met Gene Von Guten who gave me a 75 muffler if I would join the CVOA, which I did so. I drove the car back and forth to work from Frederick, MD to Rockville, MD. I recall right after Christman in 1981 the starter went out and DJ Martin from Martin Chevrolet in Centerville, VA fixed it for me. I also had a Dodge van that was not good on gas so I traded it in on a Fiat X1/9 and started using that as my daily driver. Since I like the color, I had the Cosworth painted the same color and ordered GM stripes and put them on. I did not know there ever was any colored Cosworths. Later people thought it was Firethorn.

According to Dick Baumhauer, the car is still owned by him in 2011, but is being offered for sale by his son Devin, as Dick is now suffering from dementia. He says the VIN is 1V77O6U172038.

Offered for sale on eBay by Totally Vintage Auto of Mt. Morris, MI in March of 2011: Up for auction is a sharp 1976 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega hatchback L-4 equipped with a Cosworth twin-cam 122 aluminum engine. This vehicle has an astonishing low 440 ORIGINAL miles. Car still has dealership plastic over the floor mats and original window sticker is still in the window. We purchased the Vega in 1990 from an individual who owned several Vegas. It has ALWAYS been stored in a climate controlled garage. Two years ago the fuel pump was replaced, but nothing has been altered on this vehicle, vehicle will come with the original fuel pump that was removed. IMPORTANT FACTS:
*1976 Cosworth Vegas were primarily Maroon or Black. This vehicle is Antique white with Gold pin-stripes.
*Comes with original factory produced GM tent, vinyl and zipper are in excellent condition. When not in use Tent is stored in its original GM Box.
*Comes with very rare factory installed 5-speed manual transmission (most were 4-speeds).
*Interior is in 100% show room condition.
*Car won 'Gold Spinner Certificate' in 1989 as part of Spinner Concourse.
We have the original title and ALL original paperwork from 1976 including the promotional GM book about the car, shop repair manual. There has been minimal maintenance done to this car. As far as I know it is the original oil, antifreeze, grease, that came with the vehicle brand new. This car has been started twice a year, shifted into reverse and forward moved in and out of the garage since ownership, some 20 years ago. Yes, in replacing the fuel pump there was a leak at a connection that has been fixed since the time the pictures were taken..

Offered for sale in November of 2012 out of Brentwood, CA by wyreryder. Listing reads: " For Auction is a 1976 Vega Cosworth with remarkable standard features including a 4-cylinder 2.0 litre 16 valve Cosworth Twin overhead cam engine, electronic fuel injection, stainless steel header, 5 speed manual transmission, 4.10 posi-traction rear differential, front disc brakes with front and rear stabilizer bars. Its performance and handling are respectable with these factory features along with four new 205/60-13 tires on the gold painted original aluminum alloy 8 spoke 6" wheels. It will need a driver upper control arm bushing before too many more miles. With 89,000 miles, it uses some oil, is running well with new spark plugs and wires, emission PAIR tubes. It has a new high pressure fuel pump and both filters have been replaced. It is a matching number motor and has current CA tags, smog and new exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter to the chrome tip. The dash bezel still shows the engine turn finish, but is worn to silver, the clock and tachometer do not work. It has the custom original interior (tear on the drivers seat), the carpeting in the front and rear is very good, better than the faded section under the hatch. There is a medium tint on all the windows, including flip out rear ones (driver side has loose clip). The body and paint have nicks, blemishes and some peeling, although a very shiny black with all of the gold Cosworth striping, it will eventually need repair in several spots, including; the roof, hood, hatchback, and driver fender. This complete Cosworth Twin Cam is an eye catcher today and could be freshened up to showroom condition. Enjoy the bidding on a well-equipped and road worthy Cosworth Vega!" The VIN is 1V77O6U172155 and it has 89k miles..
