Selling my 1976 Cosworth #2900 $11450 OBO
$11,450 - Canton, MI
1976 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega
VIN: 1V77O6U203387
condition: excellent
cylinders: 4 cylinders
drive: rwd
fuel: gas
odometer: 38000
paint color: orange
size: compact
title status: clean
transmission: manual
type: hatchback
For your consideration is a 1976 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega with an Orange exterior and Black interior. It has a 5-speed manual transmission & 4.10:1 rear axle, an added center console in the interior and Air Conditioning that was installed before the first owner would take delivery of the vehicle. This is an extremely solid original Texas car with approximately 38,000 miles on the odometer that runs and handles very well. It still retains the original factory installed twin cam engine with original block, head and cam carrier as evidenced by the factory stamped Tonawanda number on the 3 main components of the engine and the partial VIN number stamped on the block.

The Cosworth Vega was a limited production version of the popular Vega Hatchback that was built in 1975 & 1976, with a total of approximately 3508 units being made. The primary difference between the Cosworth and standard Vega was the high performance 4 cylinder dual overhead cam engine that had Electronic Fuel Injection, and along with this had a high performance chassis with cast-aluminum gold wheels and a unique appearance package featuring gold trim accenting the paint outside and an engine-turned gold dash panel on the inside that had a unique production number plaque for each car affixed to it. This one has #2900 as its' Cosworth production number.

I have owned #2900 since April of 2007. It ran a little rough when I first got it, and having other vehicles to attend to before I had the time to work on this one, it wasn't until about 3 years ago that it became my main focus. I methodically began going through the car, determined to get it running as I knew it should. The gas tank was dropped and refurbished, the sending unit rebuilt and steel fuel lines were inspected to make sure all was clean. New in-tank and high pressure pumps were installed along with all new fuel hoses, original fuel filter and rebuilt injectors. The CTS (coolant temp sensor) was rebuilt, all other components of the EFI system were verified as working correctly, and all connectors of the EFI harness were inspected and cleaned. A new water pump, thermostat, re-cored radiator, timing belt, spark plugs and wires, heater hoses, vacuum hoses etc were installed and all hardware and components that I removed were refurbished or replaced to original factory appearance. Where appropriate, original (date correct) Wittek tower style refurbished hose clamps were installed to retain the original factory look. The car now runs excellent. The A/C system was professionally serviced and set up to use R-134a refrigerant and it blows a good volume of nice cold air.

Along with the engine work done, there was some rusting of the battery tray and metal underneath it, so the tray was removed and replaced with one that I believe is for a Camaro, and the area under the tray was cleaned, treated, repaired and all repainted. The spare tire well had some very minor surface rust, so that was also cleaned, treated, repainted and re-spattered.

The interior has been addressed as well, with a new dash bezel installed, new light bulbs in the dash and the dome light replaced, new carpet in the hatch area and on the back of the rear seat (was sun bleached), the drivers seat had a split in the bolster that was repaired, the sill plates were cleaned and polished, the comfort clips on the seat belts were replaced, and the interior was thoroughly cleaned and made to look as new. On 2-6-1991 the original owner had the radio replaced with a GM digital tune model along with 2 new speakers in the dash, back in the hatch area and a speaker was installed in the right foot well vent opening. Along with all this an electric antenna was installed in the right front fender, that will go up correctly, but will not retract properly. I was able to get it to go down, but to do further work on it will require removing the fender. Seeing that it receives radio signals fairly well as is, I did not venture into what is wrong with the antenna. I also need to mention that the clock was replaced by an oil pressure gauge at some point.

The paint is original except for the right fender, right door, right quarter panel, front header panel and headlight buckets. Those have been repainted as the paint on them had blisters in it. Also, I replaced the front valance panel that was cracked in several places with a fiberglass one rather than the plastic original style so that the chance of it cracking again is minimized. The rest of the panels with original paint have been lightly wheeled and waxed to bring back the factory shine, but being that this has 42 year old lacquer paint on original panels, there are some blemishes in the horizontal panels that could probably be worked on more, and there are a few minor dings here and there on the car. These are not very visible in the photos, but to me it only adds to the authenticity of this being an "honest" 42 year old well cared for used vehicle. The face of the wheels have been redone and have been wrapped with new Federal 185/70R13 tires and installed with new lug nuts and the original center caps. The spare wheel has been redone and retains the original Goodyear BR70-13 tire. The spare tire well has all the original jack, lug wrench and retainers as came from the factory. The anodized aluminum bumpers have some scratches, but nothing major, and I was able to buff them out to look very good. They still have their original black rubber bump strips and front bumper guards.

I have owned several Cosworth Vegas over the years, and this is certainly a fine example of a solid, well cared for, excellent running and driving one. Is it perfect? No, but it doesn't try to be perfect, just an "honest" 42 year old Cosworth Vega that will show well at any car gathering. It isn't a trailer or garage queen that makes it difficult to drive without worry, but rather a vehicle you can take out and enjoy the high revving engine and the excellent road hugging nature of this rare limited production vehicle in the comfort of air conditioning!

I am asking $11,450 for this very nice turn key Cosworth and will certainly consider reasonable offers.

I WOULD LIKE TO MOVE THIS BEFORE WINTER SETS IN, SO IF YOU ARE AT ALL INTERESTED, CONTACT ME AND LET'S SEE WHAT KIND OF DEAL CAN BE MADE!!

Additional photos are available, just ask and I can send you the link to them.

The vehicle has been described to the best of my ability; however as with all pre-owned vehicles the condition is subjective. It is to be assumed that all used vehicles will have some degree of wear. I invite you, or your representative, to inspect the car in person.

Forms of payment are cash, bank wire transfer or certified check. The vehicle will not be released the same day of payment unless it is cash. All other forms will require verification of funds having cleared before title and vehicle are released.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask, I will answer as quickly as possible, and texting is preferred.

Please be aware that messages from Craigslist tend to go in your spam box, so look for a reply from me in your spam box or you may miss it. This is why I prefer texting. Also, if the listing is active, the item is still available.

Thank you for looking.

This firethorn Cosworth was offered for sale on eBay in May of 2004. “1976 Cosworth Vega ser. 2900 35,000 original miles, Orange with black interior, 5 speed with under dash A/C AM/FM Cassette original look alike. New tires, all new ignition parts, fuel injectors and fuel pumps (original replacements), timing and dist. drive belts, clutch and pressure plate. Body is in excellent condition with no rust or major damage, paint is like new, spare is original bias ply. Paper work and manuals come with car. I am second owner and car was garage kept since purchased in 76. Interior is in excellent condition with aftermarket consol. Seats have two small tears which are now patched; carpeting is excellent with no tears or stains. Only problem is the fuel gauge sending unit (resistor) is bad and gauge is inoperative. Original transmission was replaced with another CV transmission and works fine.”

Waxed it last night and it looks good as new, not a spot of rust or tear in the seats... Thanks for all the tech help. Andy

Posted on Yahoo in February, 2000: I purchased CV#2900, it is in showroom condition however it has
just one small problem. It won’t run...the dealer that had it let it set for 5 years and both fuel pumps
were bad and I had to have the tank dipped and cleaned out. Once I got that done I find the ECU will not
start the pumps. I bypassed the ECU and got fuel to the Injectors, however they are not functional. Is
there someplace to have the ECU repaired or is there a conversion kit for a Weber setup. I really do not
want to get away from original however I may have no choice. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,
Andy. atgrillo2000@yahoo.com

Offered again on eBay in November of 2006: “This auction is for a 1976 Cosworth Vega. The car has
been parked for years and does have a good SC paper work with it. This car is VERY restorable. Has some
minor rust but most is surface rust. The engine is out of the car and disassembled. Block was scored so it
will need sleeved and some pistons. Transmission is still in the car. The interior is pretty good in it but is
a little dry but has one spot on the driver’s seat that I have noticed. This car is #2901 and has 47006
miles on it. I have more pictures available of this car. Just send me your e‐mail address and I will send
them to you. I bought this car to fix and will fix it if it does not sell. But right know I have to many
projects including 3 other Cosworth Vegas that I have had for years that I need to fix also. Would like to
see someone buy the car and fix it. This item is used and sold AS IS. If you have any questions please e‐
mail me and please check out my other auctions. “This vehicle is being sold for parts only and is not
operational or street legal. Therefore, upon purchase, it will need to be either towed or trailered. EBay
encourages its members to learn about their state laws governing vehicle sales prior to the sale or

According to a September 2006 email to your editor, #2901 was last titled to Zachary D Taylor, Rt. 2 Box
104 Fountain Inn, South Carolina 29644. The VIN is 1V7706U205404. This car was financed through
General Finance Corporation, 1608 Laurens Rd., Greenville, SC 29607. It appears that he gave $864.00
for it. Also appears that lien was paid off on March 29, 1983. What I was told on this car when I bought
it was that he had owned 3 Cosworths. He said that he had bought one new and someone stole it and
flipped it. Since it was totaled the insurance bought another one for him. He said that they both came
from the same dealership (which I was under the impression that a dealership just got one?). So he said
that he had gotten the second one and the dealership called him and said that a lady had just traded
#2901 in. So he bought it too. I was told that he bought the car and drove it until 78 and ran it hot on the
freeway on his way home from the service. Said that he tore the car down in 79 and nothing was done
to it. Car was supposed to have been garage kept from 1989 till September 2004 when I bought it. I
bought the car out of Simpsonville, SC as a package deal. Got #2901 and a 33,000 mile 74 Vega with it. I
trailered the Cosworth home and drove the 74 home. Have to say that I was VERY pleased with the
package deal. Ronnie

Mauldin, South Carolina. I purchased this car from a lady in 1978. Car only has 47,000 miles, but was
run hot on the highway and scored the cylinder walls. It has been disassembled since 1981. It has been
stored inside since 1989. It is complete except ignition key, battery, and original gas cap. I have a new
head gasket kit. It is being sold with a 74 Vega. It has 133k with air conditioning and is very solid. This 4
speed car drives fine. Front seats are split under covers. Tires have dry rot. Pinhole's in spot on hood. I

Listed for sale on eBay in June of 2002 by Bob Huber of Peru, IN. His ad text is, “What you're looking at
here is #2909 of a limited production automobile. It's a very nice unrestored original 1976 hugger
orange Cosworth Vega, this car has under 69k original miles. If you're looking at this ad you probably
know a lot about the Cosworth but it is a legendary car and the Cosworth engine was actually an Indy
car engine it is a 4 cylinder 16 valve twin cam fuel injected engine with a stainless factory header. The
car has a 5‐speed gearbox and a posi 10‐bolt rear end. These cars are rare and somewhat hard to find
but to find one that is an original unrestored car has to add to the value of the car. This car is not
perfect and has some dents and scratches but overall is in very good drivable condition. The interior is
in good condition but the rear carpet would need some attention. The car runs good but could use a
tune‐up. It has been stored inside for several years so paint looks good. Look at the pictures closely and
I have more photos I could e‐mail upon request. Bid with confidence, this is a nice old Cosworth. Buyer
pays all shipping or travel expenses related to delivery. This car is sold as‐is with no exceptions. I will
contact the winning bidder within 24 hours of the end of the auction to make final payment and
shipping arrangements thanks, bob.” It is VIN 1V7706U206358, has 68716 miles, and has a “Beige/Tan”
interior, and is listed as being in “average” condition. He is asking $5,999.00.

1976 Cosworth Vega #2911 (purchased from CVOA member Gary Parks). The car has 67k miles on it and
is black w/gold trim. It has white interior w/black carpet. This has been a daily driver for me for the last
2‐years and I've only recently cut back on driving it due to a small water leak (water pump I believe). The
car runs very strong and turns heads wherever I take it. It's rust free and has some newly refurbished
gold wheels. I installed a great little pioneer sound system (2‐speaker with power unit) so you can rock
out while driving the car. I also have a stack of paperwork that goes with the car that was given to me by
Gary. I'm going to be asking $4000 for it on eBay when I get around to putting it up. Since times are
tough for everyone out there, this figure is negotiable so don't be afraid to make an offer. The worst
that can happen is that I say, thanks, but no thanks. Mike Murphy, 08/09.

I know this may be impossible to do, but I'm curious about who all has owned #2911. Since I have a
handful of "old" CVOA mags, (dating back to '82), I have a pretty good idea of recent owners:
Mike Murphy (current owner)

Gary Parks (CVOA mag is dated July '01)
Herb Feulner (CVOA mag is dated April '01)
John Slater (CVOA mag is dated September of '85)
Does anyone know if Herb purchased from John? Any idea who John purchased from? Are Herb and
John still on this mailing list? If so, reach out to me, I'm very interesting in finding the rest of this car’s
owners. Mike, #2911
