According to Robert Bowen’s January, 1978Registry, this car then belonged to John F. Cowall.
Owned by John F. Cowall. He did a 4 to 5‐speed transplant with a rear crossmember from Dick
Baumhauer. He used a 4‐speed shifter boot after cutting off the bottom of the 5‐speed’s chrome shifter
shaft. He used a regular Monza driveshaft initially, and later replaced it with a Cosworth shaft.
John wrote about his car in his Regional Newsletter #58, "Jan 3, 1976 I pickedup my new Cosworth Vega
#0803. June 6, 1976 I picked up my first son (and wife, of course) from the hospital in that same
Cosworth Vega. Through the years, #0803 picked up 2 more kids from the hospital and over 100
autocross trophies and numerous Class & Team championships. When my son John J. Cowall became
old enough to drive, we soon bought him THREE Cosworth Vegas to start with, and we've together
owned 20. Car has EFI# 0850

wanted to be correct for your registry but I stand corrected as i double checked and I had bought from Rick Foley what you have listed as # 809 by name but it was the only car he had so im not sure where he was registered to #809 but what I purchased has #807 dash and did still have complete cosworth drive line and trim so I assume I do have #807 with vin#1V77E5U227125 so I wanted to let you know for the registry. As I said before I doubt I will ever redo it as a cosworth powered car but the car does still exist. Sorry for the mix up thought you would want to know the correct info. Thanks Cloyd

You are bidding on a 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega. A short history of this rare car: In 1974, Chevy
decided that people's perception of the Vega sucked, and for good reason; it did! They decided that
they had to do something to try and improve the Vega's image. Chevy contacted Cosworth, a British
company more known for making racing engines for Indy cars and other performance parts, and asked
them what they could do with the Vega.
Chevy shipped Cosworth a bunch of the Vega engines, Cosworth took one look at the heads and said
"Well, this is crap!" and slapped on Dual overhead cams and electronic fuel injection. And so was born
the Cosworth Vega! Chevy then added stiffer, more sport‐tuned suspension, a fancy‐looking golden
dash, some extra gauges, a decal package, and promptly sold it for twice the price of a normal Vega
(Oddly enough, one of the marketing campaigns for them was “One Vega for the price of two!”). What
differentiates the Cosworth Vega from a normal Vega? Basically, it's just a Vega with balls. The biggest
thing is the engine. In place of the standard Vega's crappy 4‐cyl that was notoriously prone to blowing
up; there is a high‐performance Cosworth racing engine. This 2.2L engine has Dual Overhead Cams
(DOHC) and Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). This may not sound like a big deal now a days, as pretty much
every car has that, but this was the FIRST car to be sold in the US with DOHC and EFI. The FIRST. (Some
cars had mechanical fuel injection, [which didn’t work very well] as far back as ’63, but this was the first
electronic) Every other car on the road at the time was still carbureted. The engine also has more
racing‐oriented camshafts, giving it a bizarrely high idle speed of 1600rpm. These engines were hand‐
built by a single mechanic (vs. just being made on an assembly line like the normal engines), who then
signed his name on a sticker that was affixed to the head when he was done (see pictures, this engine
was built by a Russell Simon, I think). Numerous other things were different on a Cosworth Vega then
on a regular Vega. The suspension is stiffer, there is a special Cosworth Vega dash plate, and there are
extra gauges. The only color that the car was available in for 1975 was black with gold trim. There were
also special cast aluminum wheels that were made specifically and ONLY for the Cosworth Vegas, and
were painted a dark gold color. This car never really made people think better of the normal Vega, but it
did surprise a lot of people at stoplights. These cars were produced in very small quantities. Only 2000
were built in 1975, and another 1500 or so in 1976, and that was IT. These cars are quite rare, and was
rated as one of the top ten collectors cars by Car and Driver. Because of the very limited numbers that
these cars were produced in, each car was specifically numbered with a plaque on the dash (see pics,
this car is number 807). This is a rare piece of Chevy and automotive history! This car specifically was
ordered with Black exterior with gold trim (as all the '75s were) with a Black vinyl interior. The only
option on the car was the rear‐window defroster, other then that, the car has no power options. It is a
4‐speed stick shift with, I think, a 4.11 rear end (but don't quote me on that). The wheels are the
original ones that came with the car. Eugh . . . where to begin? THIS IS A PROJECT CAR. THE CAR IS NOT
DRIVABLE IN ITS CURRENT STATE, AND WILL NEED TO BE FLATBEDDED OUT! PLEASE SEE PICTURES!
Okay, now that that's out of the way, let me give a background of this car. Sorry for being long‐winded,
but I’m just going to be as detailed as possible. As stated, this would need to be a project car. The
engine does run, and runs damn well! (Kind of loud, as the exhaust system is bad and the engine idles
really high at 1600rpm, but it's designed that way. It's supposed to idle that high, it has to because of
the racing cams). But to be honest, that's one of the few things on the car that works properly. A
history: I originally bought this car from my neighbor, who had bought it new in 1975. He drove it an
average amount, but realizing that this was a pretty rare car and would be valuable some day, he just
parked it in his garage in 1993 and left it there for the next ten years. Eventually, his wife started to nag
him to either fix the car up, or get rid of it, so I bought the car off him with intentions to restore it. At
that point, the car had been sitting in a garage for 10 years, after being driven for 13 or so. Nothing
worked on the car, mice had made nests in the insulation, the fuel tank was solid jelly (he hadn't drained
it before storing it), the engine didn't run, the fuel system was shot, and the paint was peeling away
from all over the car. I put a lot of work into this car. Here are the things that I have so far fixed:
‐Boosted up engine to patch hole in oil pan (this may need to be re‐done)
‐Removed gas tank, had it completely boiled out, stripped, re‐coated, sealed and rubberized
‐Replace both fuel pumps (the in‐tank one and the high‐pressure body mounted one)
‐Replace all fuel lines
‐Replace battery and put on new tires
‐Fix other various electrical problems (burned out headlight, chewed wiring, etc)
That was what was needed to get the engine running again, pretty much replacing the whole fuel
system. But this car will need quite a bit of work. It's all doable, but unfortunately, I realized that this
project is beyond my skill, knowledge, time, and most importantly, budget. Other things that I know are
wrong with the car:
‐Exhaust system is falling off from the cat converter back. Will probably need to be replaced
‐The transmission and clutch are both very strong (Chevy just used whatever off‐the‐shelf 4‐speed stick
trans they had laying around, in this case it was the same transmission as in the Corvette), however the
bushings on the shifting linkage are messed up. It takes a lot of muscle to shift, and will not shift into
reverse.
‐Sitting in a garage for 10 years took it's toll on the body. As you can see in the pictures, I started some
bodywork before I realized that I was in over my head (stripped and primed the hood and roof, removed
the paint from part of the trunk but never got around to painting it, so that's got a lot of surface
rust). The whole car, however, will need to be stripped and re‐painted, along with some bodywork
(front lower corners of the doors are rusted through, and there's probably some other various holes in
the body that will need to be filled). The special Cosworth Vega decal set can still be purchased from the
Cosworth Vega Owner's Association (CVOA)
‐The rear two rims do not hold air. The tires on the car have less then 50 miles on them. The front two
rims hold air okay, but the back ones leak out after a couple days. The gold coating that the rims had
from the factory is flaking off, they will need to be cleaned and re‐painted. There is a full‐size spare tire.
‐Last year, before I started the bodywork, I did drive the car around town for a while, and the brakes
seamed to work okay. But the guy had this car sitting for 10 years without putting it on blocks, so I think
the springs and shocks may need to be replaced, as it's riding pretty low. This might be the way it's
supposed to be, though, I don't know.
‐The windshield has a single long crack in it, from the middle of the bottom to just about the center of
the windshield.
‐Driver’s side rear‐view mirror is falling off (cable controls for it still work, it just needs to be bolted back
on)
‐Under‐hood insulation is coming off. Replacements can be gotten from the CVOA.
‐Shifting lever is missing the knob (I've got no idea what happened to that. It was on the car when I got
it, so it might still be rattling around the car somewhere, I haven't checked)
‐Speedometer doesn't work. It did work when I got it, though, so I know the mileage is accurate.
‐One of the headlights doesn't work
‐Generally needs a lot of bodywork
‐It needs a belt on the alternator (I had put one on last year; don't know what happened to it. I just
noticed it was missing as I went outside to it today to take pictures)
‐Lot of leaves have collected in the lower engine compartment, so I would be wary about running the
engine for long periods of time without cleaning them out first (don't want to start a fire)
‐Fuel Gauge doesn't work
‐Needs blades on the windshield wipers
‐The drivers‐side door sags. Some dolt before I owned the car put the hinge pin in upside‐down, it's an
easy fix.
The interior actually isn't in that bad of shape, considering the rest of the car. It's got a tach (which
worked, last I checked), fuel gauge (which doesn't work), engine temp gauge, voltage gauge, Oil temp
and Oil pressure gauges mounted underneath the dash (these might be aftermarket, I’m not sure). The
carpets got a lot of crushed up leaves and stuff on it, but would actually be in darn good shape if it was
vacuumed. When I first got the car, I discovered mice nests in the rear trunk insulation, so I pulled most
of the out. The back seat folds down flat. AM/FM radio works! Engine compartment could really use to
be cleaned out, it' got some twigs and leaves and stuff that have blown into it over the last year that I’ve
had it. Again, though, engine does run and runs well! Gets a very good 50 psi or so of oil pressure, so
we know that all the seals and gaskets on the engine are in good shape. Doesn't leak any coolant, and
doesn't smoke or anything. Just needs an alternator belt. That's most all I can think of right now off the
top of my head. Again, this is a project car! It will need to be flat bedded out. I'm in Northbrook, IL
(northern suburb of Chicago). PLEASE if you have any questions at all about this car, I implore you to
either contact me through e‐mail, or on AIM (Name is Tsaven Nava). Pre‐bid inspections are welcome, if
not preferable! I just want you to know exactly what you are bidding on. This is a rare car, and could be
a really fun car to drive and a good project, but it will take some work. VIN1V77E5U227125. 70,978
miles. Black/ Black Vinyl

Chris: 75‐0808 has popped back into this dimension from the Twilight Zone. I received a call from the
new owner and he will get back to me about the VIN# and other pertinent info. I told him how to
contact you and a few others in the Club regarding fuel injectors and other items to get the car properly
running. I was under the impression that I had what was left of #0808's motor, but it turned out that I
was given the wrong information. Sorry. Chris Long
Bob Colon reports in his Yahoo! Profile that he has some of the parts from this car.
According to a web page by Tom Benford: Ed Hayes went to the local salvage yard in search of some
parts he needed for one of his collector cars. Little did he realize when he set out that day that he would
stumble upon another collectible car – a 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega – that was destined for the
crusher. The car was basically all there; with the exception of a timing chain cover and some other minor
parts, this was definitely a restorable survivor and the price was right. That's how this particular
Cosworth Vega became a member of the Hayes collector car stable. In cleaning the car's interior for this
photo shoot, Hayes uncovered the original factory Water Test Inspection document, dated 3 ‐ 28 ‐ 75,
stuck to the bottom springs of the driver seat, where it had been stowed some 33 years ago. VIN ‐

I'm working on #138 now. It had timing belt trouble when I got the car, Pistons were hit, it last ran on fuel injection my other cars all had Weber's. I got it running on the fuel injection, idles a little high. I had a oil leak in the front , need a sleeve and seal on the crank that should fix it. Another problem is it needs a heater core any ideas on where I can get one or a substitute thanks.
#1943 bought new in 1977 Rusty tired has "aftermarket GM power heavy duty Block" sure!
#815 bought as a rust bucket for parts
#138 bought blown up body pretty good body now runs need heater core.

I am looking for a new dash for my 75 Cosworth Vega #818. Mine has 2 or 3 cracks in it and I would love
to find one without any cracks. If anyone knows of anyone who has a new or used black dash with no
cracks. Please e‐mail me at Fan1jg@a... Thank You. Carl Stafford

In August of 2003 a Cosworth Vega engine appeared for sale in Oregon on eBay. The seller provided the
following information, which included the VIN of the block. “Hi Mark. Got the info for you. I could not
find out about the previous owner, sorry. I did find an alternator (brand new) that I believe goes to the
car (65amp one wire about $35 exchange at NAPA) and a bracket which looks like a water pump, but it’s
too small (?). I also checked the engine by turning it with a wrench. It does have compression. Anyway,
here is the information and I will be updating the auction with this as well (I like to keep everything
above board as it comes in, I may wait to hear back from you if you email me Saturday);
1. Cam carrier; 3348
Head; 3348
Block; 805. I can tell the block and head are not original but then the next car it goes into will not be
original anyway.
2. Flange of bellhousing; T0529ZCA
3. Partial ; 15U227630
Chris Wheaton did not have the block VIN in his database and suggested that it came from car number
0820. “Mark, I don’t have that exact VIN in my database, but I would guess it was out of dash #0820.”
