There is an interesting story concerning this black/black vinyl car with swingouts. It is now owned by
Micky McDaniel in Farmington, NM. Micky runs a machine shop and drives fast motorcycles and cars.
About six years ago a friend of his, who works at a scrap yard, saw a Cosworth Vega come in. It had all
the glass, it had a good body, the interior was so‐so, but it did not run. His friend thought it would make
a good car to repair and asked his boss for it. His boss had only paid $20 for the car and gave it to him.
He towed it home and began to work on the engine, pulling the cam carrier and head.
His friend called Micky and had him come over to see the car and told him the story of how he had
gotten it. Micky, impressed with the car, told his friend that if he ever wanted to get rid of it, to give
Micky a call.
It took two years but eventually the call came. His friend asked if he still wanted the car and Micky
jumped at it. Come and get it was the response and Micky lost no time towing it back to his shop.
He found a mess under the hood. According to Micky, “The engine was in a million pieces.” All of the
bolts had been dropped into the cowl area and had rusted, the top of the engine had been left open and
the sleeved block’s bores had also rusted (Micky says the engine had thrown a rod long ago). In
addition, the pistons were burned. Believe it or not, Micky found all the bolts in the cowl, and he began
rebuilding the engine.
He bored and honed the block, installed new 10.5:1 pistons, resurfaced the head and polished the crank.
He put everything back together, including the original fuel injection, and started it up. It started and
ran fine and he drove it briefly, and experimented with the exhaust system. He found that a straight
path from the header to a Flowmaster muffler made way too much noise, that the car would rattle
windows as he drove it down the street—it was just too loud. He found that the more he bottled up the
exhaust, the more tolerable the sound, but the greater the impact on performance. Eventually he
determined that a straight through muffler in the catalytic converter location and the Flowmaster in the
stock location resulted in good performance and an almost perfect exhaust note.

According to an email in July of 2010, Tom Sullivan reports, “I just purchased no. 195. The door sticker is
partially gone. The tire size indicated is BR (scratched off). What is the correct size and is Goodyear the
correct supplier?” He added in a later email: “The VIN for 195 is 1V77E5U203357. My brother (a car
dealer ) purchased the car at the Carlisle, PA, classic car meet in May and sold it to me. He knew I was a
fan of the car.
I joined the Cosworth Vega club recently and intended to put the car on the registry when I had the
opportunity to go thru the car. You can enter the number and I'll fill in the rest later. The body is in
excellent condition (appears to have been repainted ‐ its black with gold trim) and the engine seems to
be very good although it has a varying idle while warming up. I found a computer in the trunk so I have
to assume there's been a problem there. There was a brief piece on the registry from a previously
unknown owner who purchased the car after it was stored for 15 years. Miles shown is 31,000 plus but
I'll bet the odo has turned. Someone put a set of bias ply tires on the car so my first action is to replace
them with good radials. I intend to bring the car as close to original as possible although its close now.

Offered for sale on eBay in February of 2008. The car is located in Hingham, MA. The VIN is
1V77E5U203447. According to the listing, “1975 Chevy Vega Cosworth. #0196. I’m selling this car for a
friend. She owned the car for four years. She bought it with 41,242 miles. Car has 41,748 miles. Driven
mostly to car shows. This Vega is a four cylinder 120 hp 4‐spd, posi w/ 373 rear end gears. All
stock. Just had oil change done. Was garaged and off road for two years. Car runs and drives, but
smokes when started. Mechanic says most likely due to sitting. Solid car. Very little rust. Look at
pics. If nearby, come take a look at it. Email me, it is in my garage. 33 year old car, no warranties
applied. Bought as is/ where is. Please, no zero feedback or foreign bidders. Low reserve. These
Cosworths were $5,900 brand new in 1975. Less than 1500 were sold that year. It's definitely a
collector's item to keep all original and not put a v‐8 in it. Thanks for looking. Ask any questions before
bidding please. Will help load for transport.”Black/ Black vinyl

I returned to the valley early in September and started the disassembly of # 0198. I expect to paint it in
PPG black BC/CC. At this time I have removed the front bumper and disassembled all the supports and
brackets. I removed the front header panel, grille, both headlamp bodies, the hood, and both front
fenders. All front sheet metal has been striped, acid washed, and primed with PPG DP50. The hood,
having deep rust pits, had to be striped with a DA sander and 16 grit paper. The rear hatch also was
striped the same as the hood. Both panels were finished with 80 grit before being primed. I will have to
prime them with feather fill to fill the rust pits. The roof was done the same way several years ago. It has
held up very well except the black acrylic lacquer I sprayed on, to seal it, has deteriorated. The top cowl
panel, under the hood was also covered with rust pits and I stripped it with a small air tool and 3” 24 grit
PSA disks. I have removed the windshield and back glass along with both ¼ windows. It was necessary
to weld two patches in the left side of the windshield window welt and cowl panel. I finished welding in
the replaced radiator support and the patches to the front side panels. The right side took eight pieces
to get all the contours back. The left side was easy; it only took one piece to complete it. I have removed
a lot of the old dried out seam sealer and replaced it with new urethane seam sealer. I have removed
the lower front body and suspension supports and the stabilizer bar. I’m thinking I’ll have them powder
coated along with the heat shields, grill supports, and bumper mounts. The only bolt that broke, so far,
was one of the stabilizer ends. The bottom of the car is a rust pit and it looks like the easiest repair to
the drive shaft will be to have a new one built. The floors are in good shape with the exception of one
location that looks as if someone didn’t locate the lift post correctly, easy repair with the interior
removed. I’ve stopped for several weeks during the Christmas and New Year holidays. I hope I’ll get a
chance to put the car back together before Alzheimer’s sets in. Alan Healey of Apache Junction, AZ.
My Cosworth, (#0198) with 35,000 miles, has been in a heated garage since 1988 and I have found it will
not turn over. I removed the spark plugs and poured mystery oil into each cylinder and 3 days later tried
again; it still will not turn over. I'm thinking, perhaps I may need to disassemble the engine, so I don't
damage anything. Is this true? Or are their other methods that will work. Allan, 5/4/2005

Listed on eBay in April of 2004. This black/black vinyl car is located in Lake Havasu City, AZ. It is owned
now by Walter B. Ready, who owns 38 cars, including but not limited to a Hudson Commodore Coupe
with the tissue dispenser and 6 volt spotlight, a 48 Tucker, a Pierce Arrow and a Hupmobile, along with
some “AMC and Nash stuff”. This car was owned by Dan, who owns Olivia’s restaurant in Prescott
Valley, AZ. He owned it for about 5 years and had the engine completely rebuilt. Walter puffs that Dan
probably “put $15,000 into that engine”. The engine only has about 500 miles on it since the rebuild.
Walter can be reached at 928 458‐0663. He writes on eBay, “What we have is a 1975 original Cosworth
Vega with very low production number. This car has the original wheels, right center caps and almost
new tires. The spare is also the original wheel and has the original jack and tire tool. This car has no rust
that I have found. The engine has been totally rebuilt with new steel sleeves. It still has the original fuel
injection and factory headers. This is a 16‐valve engine from the factory. This is a factory 4‐speed
car. This is great little car you should be able to drive anywhere. The car is located in Lake Havasu City,
Arizona for pickup. We have a very low reserve for this type of car. Wife can't drive standard
shift. Please bid your pleasure. If there are any other questions, please call me at home 928‐505‐5310
and I will try to answer. This our first time selling a car on eBay so please bear with us. It looks as if this
car has a repaint with slight orange peel. Good detail and waxing would make it look really good. The
seats are very presentable with no rips and tears and the dash is not cracked. This is not a show car but
turns a lot of heads for being so unusual. I have seen 2 other Cosworths and this is at least as nice if not
nicer. Need $500 non‐refundable deposit within 48 hours. The balance is due within 7 days or
sooner. We prefer cash but will take cashier's check, money order or wire. Please use PayPal only for
the $500 deposit. Will help with the pickup if I can. Remember the car is located in Lake Havasu City,
Arizona. The car is sold as‐is, where‐is and no warranty.” The car has 92,000 and the VIN is
1V77E5U204257. According to the pictures on eBay, the car has clearly been repainted, it lacks the gold
stripes, the wheels look to be in good condition, the plug wires are not stock, the oil cap has been
replaced with a breather, the thermostat gooseneck has been painted or anodized gold, the pulse air
tubes are missing, and the condition of the dash bezel is indeterminate from the photos. The front
cover on the engine is non‐stock—it is wider than normal, and eliminates the back cover that shields the
cam gears. Oh, and he said he has a $5000 reserve on the car.
